About

The Medical
Decision Company.

MedExpert provides every individual with current, unbiased, and accurate information to make the most appropriate medical and health decisions. For every man, woman, and child — better information, better decisions, better outcomes.

Our Mission

Conflict-free
by design.

MedExpert has no financial ties to any organizations that could influence patient decisions for financial purposes — no arrangements with pharmaceutical companies, provider groups, or hospitals that could present a conflict of interest. The advice we deliver to members serves them, not a vendor.

Our Story

A decade
of engineering.

MedExpert invested more than a decade engineering evidence-based medicine into a platform that can cost-effectively deliver decision support, navigation, and data-analytic services — all incorporating 100% of a payer's data sources in near real time. The result: a Healthcare Decision System unlike anything else in the market.

About the Team

MedExpert Visionaries.

MedExpert is shaped by a remarkable team of leaders from healthcare, health policy, engineering, artificial intelligence, and business — each playing a pivotal role in building MedExpert's AI-driven, evidence-based decision systems and grounding them in patient-first principles.

Mary Hiller

Mary Hiller is a pioneer in medical information and knowledge engineering with over 40 years of experience at the intersection of health systems, medical research, and artificial intelligence.

As President of MedExpert International, she is the chief architect behind the company's innovative systems designed to identify evidence-based medicine through a sophisticated set of algorithms. The platform leverages AI, machine learning, and human pattern recognition to deliver objective, medically validated decision support.

Maryann Mason

Maryann Mason is a prominent leader in the healthcare technology sector, currently serving as Senior Vice President of Medical Informatics at MedExpert International. In this role, she leads efforts to harness advanced technology and data-driven systems to improve member outcomes, ensuring services are effective, transparent, and of the highest quality. Her work reflects a deep commitment to transforming healthcare delivery through strategic, innovative solutions embedded throughout MedExpert's operations.

Founding Advisors
Computational Science

Larry Smarr, PhD

Founding director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-(IT)²) and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at UIUC, where he led the development of Mosaic — the web browser that became the foundation for Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Smarr brought engineering and informatics expertise that ensured MedExpert's technology would be efficient, scalable, and built for healthcare's complexity.

Medical AI

Peter Szolovits, PhD

Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT and head of the Clinical Decision-Making Group within the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. A world authority and pioneer in medical AI, Dr. Szolovits led the field toward reasoning about disease mechanisms, temporal evolution, and model-based clinical inference. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a fellow of multiple AI and informatics academies.

Health Services Policy

Brian Biles, MD, MPH

Professor and Emeritus Chair of the Department of Health Services Management and Policy at George Washington University. Dr. Biles served seven years as staff director of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, then as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health under the Clinton Administration. His career has focused on Medicare, health financing, and informed medical decision-making.

Healthcare Leadership

David Lawrence, MD

Former CEO and Chairman of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals. Dr. Lawrence's experience leading one of the nation's largest integrated health systems provided invaluable real-world testing for MedExpert's AI — assessing how the automated EBM system would perform against traditional teams of clinicians manually generating patient-specific guidelines. A member of the Institute of Medicine, he is the author of From Chaos to Care: The Promise of Team-Based Medicine.

Health Economics

Marilyn Moon, PhD

Emeritus Vice President and Director of the Health Program at the American Institutes for Research. A nationally recognized expert in Medicare, aging, and health care financing, Dr. Moon served as one of two public trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds and is Program Director for the Commonwealth Fund's Program on Medicare's Future. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Aging & Senior Policy

John Rother

Former Director of Policy and Strategy at AARP, where he advocated for the interests of more than 42 million senior citizens. Previously served eight years in the U.S. Senate as Special Counsel for Labor and Health, and as Staff Director and Chief Counsel for the Special Committee on Aging. A leading authority on aging, long-term care, Social Security, and pensions.

Healthcare Policy

Philip R. Lee, MD

A distinguished physician, health policy expert, and public health advocate. Dr. Lee served as Assistant Secretary for Health under Presidents Johnson and Clinton, played a pivotal role in the implementation of Medicare, and helped found the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. At MedExpert, his monthly meetings with Medicare and policy leaders ensured that the platform's AI was designed with patient-first principles aligned with regulatory needs.

Biotechnology & Business

Robert "Bob" Swanson

Co-founder of Genentech (1976) — one of the world's first biotechnology companies — and a pioneering figure in biotech. After founding K&E Management, Bob worked closely with MedExpert from 1998 until his passing in December 1999, refining medical decision systems and developing business cases for evidence-based medicine. He was the last person to work with MedExpert's manual algorithms before the transition to fully automated AI in 2000.
